The Ki-da-do-dun-kay-go Program
Ki-da-do-dun-kay-go means "You can do something" in the Ojibway language.
Since 1989, we have been providing Behavioural Health treatment to Aboriginal adults affected by trauma including being victimzed. During the past several years there has been an increase in the number of clients that have been impacted by crime. Aboriginal adults experience multiple and complex layers of trauma resulting from their being victimzed. This victimization will often times activate any underlying Indian Residential School trauma.
Our focus is to help the victim heal and overcome the trauma. We are here to provide on-going, long-term services.
The Ki-da-do-dun-kay-go Program will provide trauma treatment support services specifically for Aboriginal women and men who have been impacted by crime. This program will help participants to address trauma, fear and other feelings that result after being victimized.
Participants attend and participate in a combination of individual sessions and two day, five day and/or ten day group sessions with Behavioural Health Specialists. Our sessions complement each other and they build on the progress already made. The Aboriginal Traditional ways and teachings are part of the stream that helps participants to get back their cultural and traditional ways of parenting and strengthens their motivational disciplines. The goals of all sessions are for participants to find the immediate right steps for themselves.
The main focus is to teach participants to create safety in their lives, homes and to begin to strengthen themselves in making healthier and good decisions for themselves and their children and family. They will begin to implement their own strategy and disciplines for a healthier and progressive lifestyle. Healthy individuals means healthier families and healthier communities.
